Operations Update:
Week of 5/8/2023
Daily Operations:
The active working face is currently located in cells 11, 12 and 13. The working face is processing both rail and street volume and is utilizing clean soil, approved alternative daily cover and the Envirocover machine. The perimeter water/vapor-based neutralizer systems, odor boss and truck wash are also in operation.
NYSDEC Odor Hotline and Verification System: (585) 453-2416
A dedicated odor hotline and verification system for residents to report and record any concerns regarding High Acres Landfill and its operation.
Construction Activities:
Temporary odors may occur during trenching and construction activities that are necessary for project completion and future improvements.
Cell 13-B-2 construction is complete, and filling operations have commenced.
Cell 14 Perimeter Landfill Road Realignment / Excavation / Utility Flare Relocation – construction is underway

Renewable Energy Powerplant and Landfill Gas Management:
Continuous use of gas collection wells and flares for odor control. Ongoing work includes raising gas collection wells, installation of additional horizontal gas collectors, installation of gas vacuum lines, and upgrades to the gas collection wells for drainage and collection enhancement. Well-raising is a daily activity in coordination with filling operations.
High voltage inspections are scheduled starting on Saturday 5/13 to inspect the high voltage generator systems. The scheduled Gas to Energy Facility electrical power shutdown will affect the Gas Plants and flares operations on May 14th.
This shutdown event is scheduled for Sunday, between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm.
It is necessary to periodically conduct various required testing/ oil sampling from the main power transformers on site, as part of the EEE Testing/integrity verification program for the interconnects to the utilities. During this time, our gas collection capability may be reduced, and we will be operating the enclosed flare(s) for gas control with the onsite backup power generator. Our gas Technicians will be onsite during this shutdown period and will monitor for any possible impacts and ensure that the gas systems are brought back online as soon as possible.
The EEE Inspections will run from May 13 – 16th , with single engines being isolated at the plants during this period. These individual engine shutdowns will not impact the site gas collection and flares.
Organics Composting:
The organics composting operation (food waste collected from three local universities, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, and the University of Rochester) continues to be managed in the approved organics compost area. Weekly delivery of food waste continues.
High Acres has partnered with Green Renewable Inc. and bagged our homegrown compost to give away to community members at different events throughout the year.
Leaf Composting and Brush/Wood chipping:
Each year, leaves are received from nearby communities and managed at High Acres. They are placed in rows and turned periodically in order to encourage the natural decomposition process. Brush and wood waste received will be ground into wood chips for use by the town and the site to build trails or use in landscape applications. We also have a giveback program with the Town of Perinton for residents to receive homegrown wood chips.
