High Acres Landfill Operational Updates 11/11/2022

Operations Update:

Week of 11/7/2022

Daily Operations:

The active working face is currently located in cells 11, 12 and 13. The working face is processing both rail and street volume and is utilizing clean soil, approved alternative daily cover and the Envirocover machine. The perimeter water/vapor-based neutralizer systems, odor boss and truck wash are also in operation.

Construction Activities:

Cell 13-B-2 construction is now complete. Awaiting regulatory approval from DEC.

Cell 15A Mass Excavation started in January and is planned to finish in December of 2022.

Rail pad resurfacing and access road improvements are now completed as of Q3.

Currently deploying an additional 20 acres of the temporary exposed HDPE cap, in the Cell 12 area for additional odor control and gas collection. Expected to be complete in Q4. Temporary odors may occur during trenching and construction activities that are necessary for project completion and future improvements. Photos of construction below.

Renewable Energy Powerplant and Landfill Gas Management:

Continuous use of gas collection wells and flares for odor control. Ongoing work includes raising gas collection wells, installation of additional horizontal gas collectors, installation of gas vacuum lines, and upgrades to the gas collection wells. On 11/10, maintenance service on one of the engine compressors was completed. Also on 11/10, one of the plants was down for maintenance. The two enclosed flares (Zink and LFG) remained on during this time and landfill gas was still being collected. All engines are currently up and running.

(Ongoing) Currently installing vacuum lines and sub-headers to 9 vertical wells located in Cell 13 for additional gas collection.

Organics Composting:

The organics composting operation (food waste collected from three local universities, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, and the University of Rochester) continues to be managed in the approved organics compost area. Weekly delivery of food waste continues.

High Acres has partnered with Green Renewable Inc. and bagged approximately 2,000 bags of our homegrown compost to give away to community members at different events throughout the year.

Leaf Composting and Brush/Wood chipping:

Each year, leaves are received from nearby communities and managed at High Acres. They are placed in rows and turned periodically in order to encourage the natural decomposition process. Brush and wood waste received will be ground into wood chips for use by the town and the site to build trails or use in landscape applications. The leaf compost continues to be turned every month.

Below are photos of recent Fall leaves collected from residents in the Town of Perinton.
